A rare 5ct, Vivid Pink Diamond mined from South Africa will be put on auction in Hong Kong this December.

It is expected to sell for $5 – $7 Million.

Some interesting facts about pink diamonds

Sometimes people are surprised about the pricing of natural pink diamonds. Pink diamonds normally are priced at 20x or higher than the equivalent size white diamond.

Here’s why:

The only mine that is able to produce pink diamonds with any consistency is the Argyle mine in Australia. The produce 90-95% of the worlds pink diamonds.

Each year, for every million carats of diamond mined, they get one carat of top pink diamonds. Thats an average of 60-65 pink diamonds per year that are over .50ct and top color. As their site notes, you could hold the entire annual production of top pink diamonds in your hand.

Since 1985, they have mined only 750 pink diamonds for their pink tender (over .50ct and top pink color). If there are 4 Billion people on earth, you can safely say that very, very few will get the chance to own a pink diamond over .50ct in size.

That of course, clarifies why pink diamonds have sold for over $1,000,000/per carat.

Ironically, current production of lab grown pink diamonds (for pinks over .50ct) is probably similar or even lower than the natural pink diamonds. We’ve only sold a handful of lab grown pink diamonds over .50ct in the five years in the business.

We are currently evaluating several lab-grown diamond options for our pink diamond supply. As visitors to our site are aware, its incredibly difficult to get lab pink diamonds over .50ct.

Passion cut Takara pink diamond

In fact, the largest we have ever offered in the past five years of selling pink diamonds is a .67ct.

We are thus working with a new asian grower who will supply the raw diamonds, and we’ll then complete the pink process via HPHT and cut and sell. FTIR evaluations will be run next week to ensure its suitable and we’ll update the results here.

As a fallback, we are also going to consider offering some natural diamonds turned pink via HPHT. A small percent of naturals have the right makeup to do this – we’re more comfortable focusing on lab grown pink diamonds, but we’ll determine our options after next weeks evaluation.
